The pigs was formed in 1971 by members of the Valley Boys. The Groups leader "Dr. Offff" Fitzgerald, and his cohorts left the Valley Boys after they “became disgruntled with the increasing bulk being added to costumes. He decided that the new dimensions in costume size hindered the performance and flexibility of the participant to the point that the real essence of participation, which is the freedom is lost “ – National Junkanoo Committee.
The pigs were the quintessential scrap group. Its members have retained the scrap group’s philosophy of “rushin” for fun” and continue the mid-twentieth century tradition of rushing in fringed pants, shirts and hats. They also maintain the old Junkanoo formation of rushing in clusters around the drummers. On the other hand, the group has become increasingly organized. The Groups name is an acronym for Power, Integrity, Guts, and Strength. The group, which is still emotionally, a part of the Valley Boys, is known for the satire and comedy of its presentations. Its leader, Dr. Offfff, has been instrumental in bringing Junkanoo music into the arena of recorded music.
